Where Justin Timberlake's ESPY Humor Comes From?

"Bruce Vilanch" = the hired gun to write jokes during the Oscars for the host (pictured left). He may know a lot about ugly unfunny t-shirts, and a bit about balls, but he definitely doesn't know sports.

For ESPN's Oscars, "The ESPYs", (aired Sun July 20) head writer Jonathan Drubner (Taft '90, Syracuse Newhouse '94) is the #1 draft pick. Drubner (right), drinking with Survivor's Ozzy Lusth at Sundance '07.

It's not easy to follow in the footsteps of Justin Timberlake's last comedy outing. (No, not Alpha Dog.) You remember the Emmy winning jingle at the intersection of anatomy and geometry? "We try and keep the monologue as topical as possible, " Drubner told TheCHIMP.net exclusively. "Thank GOD soccer didnt become HUGE in America the morning of the show."

Credit the man with a highlight of the show: Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly's list of demands ESPN will have to meet in order for them to host the show. Drub said, "It happened really fast. I had about 15 minutes to come up with a concept, then 30 seconds to pitch it to Will as he made his way from one interview to another during the “Step Brothers” press junket. Luckily, he took the bait. Phew. Had he said no, that would have been my ass." At press time, Drub still had an ass.

When Ferrell later accepted the best male athelete award AS Tiger Woods, speaking as if he were Tiger Woods, a lot of things went through our head. "We wrote that with Will 40 minutes before, " Drubner told us. We're sure it was appreciated by Tiger because... a surprisingly google-proof connection and a real, personal, relationship exists between Ferrell and Woods, that one might say runs through Scandinavia....but its in TheCHIMP.net embargo.

David Walton Continues Prep School Hotstreak

Get lost, Playboy, MTV, William Morris' mailroom, and other traditional incubators of "the next big thing". New England prep schools' Hollywood hotstreak continues.
Smokeless tobacco and tribal chants are in order for David Walton (St. Paul's 97, Brown '01). NBC took the groundbreaking step of promoting the Walton starring web show Quarterlife from "http:" to "httPRIMETIME", in an announcement yesterday (Mon. 11.19). The "angtsy, 20-something" TV series will debut on that other screen in your living room in spring 2008.
How does TV's David Walton celebrate? "The web's David Walton celebrated with a text book blackout," said Dave in a TheCHIMP.net exclusive today. Congrats.

Deerfield School Meeting in LA

The Kaufmann Era Checks In: Kelly Turner '93, Pat Duncan '93, Annabelle Richardson '94, Judas Hicks '94, Cynthia Richards '94, Martina Love '92, me (Mikey Glazer '94)

The Deerfield Community of Los Angeles met the new Headmaster, Dr. Margarita Curtis O'Brien (formerly of Andover), on Wednesday night, March 7. In typical DA meal style, there was some hanging around in the lobby talking, followed by a everyone herding in to a room, and then the newly monikered "Head of School" spoke from a dais and a microphone.

Bulletin Items picked up:
  • The Gilbane built science center was finally opened in February and appears to have some sort of Greer Store rival tucked inside.
  • King Abdullah (DA '80, King of Jordan 'current) opens his own Academy this fall. DA Teachers Suzanne Hannay and John Palmer are going to teach English there for the inaugural year.
  • During the Q&A, Max Williams ('92, Harvard '96) asked the new Head if she would consider moving school meetings down to the river. (Seriously)
  • I got my Scroll subscription renewed. Just in time to read the story on p.4 "How Faculty Couples Fell in Love".
  • Martina Love Harris ('92) turned her nose up at an early '90s photo (above), saying that the Class of '92, with a trustee already, was superior to her peer classes.
  • Pat Duncan ('93), famous as "that hippie guy", was ironically totally unrecognizable in class dress, with wife Meredith.
  • Also in attendance but not pictured: John Antonini ('92, Senior Party DJ '94, Duke '96) and lots of members of the class of '98 and '01.
RELATED: Sam Sheridan (DA '93, Harvard '97) trains himself in every gruesome violent fighting style and writes a book about it, "A Fighter's Heart". Sam appeared on The Daily Show on March 1.

DA Wrestling captain Chris Harrick (DA '94, BC '98, Berkley MBA '05) comments "had Sam discovered his latent talents earlier in life, co-captain Wes Battle would have been JV Captain with Ed Amorosi." Ouch.

My Prom Date Goes All the Way

Congratulations to my prom date for making a great decision: Annabelle Richardson ’94 is engaged.

Annabelle (Cedar Rapids H.S. ’90-91, Deerfield ’94, Boulder ’94-95, Hamilton ’98, Imaginary Forces ‘current) may best be known as the only person to go from public school “pom-pom and pigtails” cheerleader to turn to sweater/megaphone/socially selective senior “cheerleader”….and a rare Iowa’n at prep school.

In the spirit of this news, please enjoy these photos of this year’s Choate Day Banners in the run up to DA’s “thumping” of Choate 31-6 (word of the month - Nov ’06) AT Choate on Saturday, November 11.

Elements of what appears to be an expanded spirit week included: “Everybody Wear Green” Day and a baffling Deerfield orchestrated re-baptism of Choate with some type of pig nick-naming..curious.

If anyone can shed light on the deal with the Choate pig thing, please email me.

The full wedding announcement is here.

UPDATE 12.10.06: Is a pep rally bonfire supposed to look like a terrorist attack? Weird.

Exeter Kids Take Shots During the Day

Exeter Kids Also Take Shots During the Day

For the superlative of “Most Convenient Wedding of 2006” - Kevin Gottehrer’s ““negotiated joint venture and strategic alliance” with Heather Oakley in Napa Valley on Derby Day holds the lead by many lengths….

This is the “Exeter Shot” that was announced on the mic – I got excited thinking it meant a drink, not a photograph. But here it is anyways.

Pictured left to right are: Dan Gilabne (Exeter ’94, Brown ’98, HBS ’04?), Eleanor Gilbane (Exeter ’94, Duke ’98), Brendon Reardon (Exeter ’95, Georgetown ’99), Greg O’Shaughnessey (Exeter ’92, Yale ’96, Yale Law ’99?). Heather Oakly Gottehrer, Kevin, Berk Mesta (Exeter ’92, Lehigh ’96), and Ken Nelson (Exeter ‘ 94, Vanderbilt ’98)

My first ever apartment roommate – 2 unsupervised 17 year olds in D.C. - Kevin (Exeter ’94, Brown ’98, BU Law ’01, Parker Poe ‘life) married Heather in a private residence/vineyard.

In honor of my prep school cousins from Exeter, I want to highlight they too proved “worthy of their heritage” with an event focused on day time drinking – with a 2:30 call time to match. When the shout went out for an “Exeter Shot”, I scrambled to join in on some Exonian colored bloody mary mix or cranberry juice concoction (ed note: Exeter’s shares Harvard’s crimson as their color) , and instead disappointedly stumbled upon the traditional alumni magazine photo.

Rappa and I scooped up a place card for table # “Kennebunkport” – and I initially felt like Eli Manning holding
a Chargers jersey …hoping for “Palm Beach” …or even “Greenwich” if there was a any lottery or choice for preppy enclaves.

The way you feel about beads after mardi gras or the dinging of slot machines in the vegas airport on your way home – just nauseous – is pretty much how you feel about wine after 18 hours in Napa. Thankfully, Stoli, Tequila, and other shots that don’t come out of a cork’d bottle splashed across the vineyard and in to Kevin’s tuxedo creases.

As usual, there was a South Beach connection to the night – as both Officer Battle on leave and TRV were marauding the 305 simultaneously – and providing fellow Kennebunkporter Dan Gilbane live updates.

Napa has a neat county curfew of 10 PM, so the wedding ended early (just like at school). We did not have to check in face to face – though I brought a clipboard to the after-party at the Marriot’s Lobby Bar, “Characters”. Somehow, Ken and Caroline Nelson took advantage of my sloppiness and gained entry before I could establish my post at the doorway.

Full Ofoto album (mine) here.
